Bonterra The Roost 2023

The Roost is one of California's most singular expressions of Chardonnay — a wine of profound terroir, luminous texture, and the kind of quiet authority that only a great vineyard can bestow.
Blue Heron Vineyard sits along the Russian River in Mendocino's Sanel Valley, where steady sunshine and rich loamy soils support vibrant, expressive growth. The vineyard takes its name from the generations of Great Blue Herons that have nested in its Audubon Society-recognized oak grove — a living symbol of the ecological vitality that Regenerative Organic Certified® farming nurtures and protects. Clone 4 and Dijon clones, planted in distinct blocks, bring complementary character to the wine: flavor and juicy opulence from Clone 4, poise and finesse from the Dijon clones — laying the groundwork for a Chardonnay of genuine layered complexity.
Winemaker Sebastian Donoso applied a Champagne-style whole-cluster pressing approach with minimal pressure, capturing 70 percent of the juice in the first cut to preserve the most delicate aromatic compounds. After settling overnight, the juice was racked off gross lees and fermented in 100 percent Burgundian oak and concrete egg. Eighty percent of the lot underwent malolactic fermentation, contributing volume and polish, while the portion fermented in egg preserved the wine's beautiful linearity and mineral tension. The wine was aged sur lie with restrained bâtonnage for 14 months in 100 percent French oak, just 15 percent new, before bottling.
Brilliant golden straw in the glass, The Roost opens with lifted aromas of pear, lemon rind, honeysuckle, magnolia, and wet stone. The palate unfolds over poached pear, citrus blossom, honeyed toast, and a delicate hint of nutmeg, with an expressive, generous mid-palate that gives way to a finish of striking minerality, vibrant natural acidity, and extraordinary precision. Among the vintages of The Roost, this expression stands apart for its seamless interplay of energy and depth.
